Geimey and Joselyn are identical twins. They were born with a syndrome that we have yet to identify. They are very malnourished, due, in part, to being ill and in part to being born into a very poor family. Geimey recently was hospitalized with a urinary tract infection (UTI) and it was discovered that one of her kidneys is significantly smaller than the other. This could predispose her to UTIs. When she is healthy, we will take her and her sister to Ambato to have a test to see if urine from her bladder is flowing back up into her kidney. This is called reflux and happens in about 1/3rd of children who get UTIs. The reflux can cause scarring of the kidneys. As in most cases, it is difficult to diagnose their syndrome as we first have to sort out what symptoms are from the syndrome and what are from the malnourishment. The girls have now been with us for a year and a half and are doing great. They have been infection free for about 8 months and Josie is walking with the help of a walker. They both receive therapy 5 days a week and continue to improve.
